Portrait of a Teacher


As a professional photographer since 1980, Hugh Jacob understands the importance of getting at the essence of his subjects. It's a philosophy that holds true in his photographic art and in his teaching. A frequent lecturer and teacher, he has earned an enviable reputation in the subjects of Outdoor Subtractive Natural Light , High Key and Mid Key Children, Glamour/Fine Art Figure Photographic Art, a Natural Light Approach to Wedding Photography and PPA Certification courses.

Hugh has taught numerous courses and seminars in Canada and the U.S., as well as a dozen PPA Affiliate Schools and his interactive teaching style captivates students and professionals at all levels. Hugh incorporates discussions, hands-on posing and lighting demonstrations and critiques to deliver a dynamic program.
His extensive teaching experience includes such varied audiences as PPA National Conventions, The PPA International School of Professional Photography, photographic associations, Ryerson University in Toronto and Humber College, in Toronto, where he received the only "Excellence in Teaching" award given to a photographic instructor.

Working from his studio in Brampton, Ontario, Hugh has won numerous awards for his portraits, including the highest scoring portraits in Canada and the U.S., (PPA), Firsts in PPOC Canadian National Print Competitions, Kodak Gallery Awards (Ontario, Manitoba and New York), and Courts of Honour Awards (New York). He also has prints accepted in the PPOC and PPA Loan Collections and at Epcot.

Hugh holds his Master's and Photographic Craftsman Degrees in professional photography from Canada and the U.S. and is PPA Certified. He is also a fellow with the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers of Great Britain.
